A large explosion at an oil refinery near the Texas coast on Monday shot plumes of smoke into the air and forced nearby residents to shelter in place, officials said.

Valero Energy Corp. responded to a fire in a unit at its Port Arthur refinery in Texas on Monday, adding pressure to a US fuels market that’s already seen prices skyrocket due to the Middle East war.

Antonio Mitchell with the Port Arthur Fire Department confirmed there is an incident at the Valero facility but said details remain limited at this time.
